Border Crossing is Prohibited

Rental cars cannot be taken outside of Georgia, meaning crossing borders with Armenia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Russia is forbidden. Furthermore, entry into the territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia is strictly prohibited, as these regions are considered occupied under Georgian law. Attempting to enter these zones can lead to serious legal consequences.

Dangerous Winter Mountain Roads

In winter, many mountain roads become covered in ice, blocked by snow, or completely impassable. Without special preparation and equipment, rental cars should not be driven on the following routes:

• Cross Pass (Gudauri – Stepantsminda) – One of the most popular tourist routes, but it is often closed in winter due to avalanches and heavy snowfall.
• Goderdzi Pass (Adjara) – The road over the pass is extremely difficult in winter; snowfall often leads to its closure.

Remote Villages with Poor Infrastructure

Some remote settlements, especially in Svaneti, Racha, and Upper Adjara, have steep, unpaved, or damaged roads unsuitable for standard rental cars. Attempting to drive to these places can result in getting stuck or damaging the vehicle.
