Fuel Prices and Driving Tips in Georgia – What You Need to Know Before Your Road Trip

Traveling by car in Georgia offers an unforgettable experience, but for a smooth journey, it is essential to be aware of fuel prices, refueling options, and driving conditions. Here is everything you need to know about gasoline prices, refueling locations, and important road safety tips.

Fuel prices in Georgia (updated March 2025)

Georgia offers a variety of fuels, including unleaded gasoline, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Below are the latest fuel prices:

  • 92 (regular) – 2.65 GEL (~$1.02)
  • 95 (Premium) – 2.90 GEL (~$1.11)
  • 98 (Super) – 3.59 GEL (~$1.38)
  • Diesel – 3.00 GEL (~$1.15)
  • LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) – 1.80 GEL (~$0.69) (not available at all gas stations)

Most gas stations are open 24/7, but be aware that payment is only accepted in Georgian Lari (GEL). Make sure to exchange currency beforehand.

Fuel consumption in mountainous areas

Georgia's diverse terrain significantly affects fuel consumption. Driving on mountainous roads, especially in regions such as Svaneti, Kazbegi or Racha, requires more fuel than driving on flat terrain. If you are planning to travel to high-altitude areas, it is advisable to fill up your tank in advance.

Where to buy gasoline in Georgia – the best gas stations

To ensure your rental car runs smoothly, we recommend that you refuel at trusted network gas stations. These brands provide high-quality fuel:

✅ Lukoil
✅ Gulf
✅ Socar
✅ Wissol
✅ Rompetrol

Although there are other gas stations, the quality of their fuel is not always reliable. For rental cars, we strongly recommend using premium fuel.

In large cities such as Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi, networked gas stations are widely available. A station attendant will fill your tank and you can pay with a credit or debit card.

What should we do if there is no familiar gas station nearby?

If you can't find a reputable gas station, look for places where local taxi or truck drivers refuel — they know which stations offer the best quality fuel.

Availability of gas (LPG) and diesel in Georgia

Compressed natural gas (CNG) is widely available throughout the country, but not in remote areas such as Tusheti, Svaneti, and Racha. If you are traveling to these regions, consider alternative fuel options.

Propane (LPG) is less common, so don't rely on it as your primary fuel source.

Diesel is available at all gas stations in Georgia.

Driving Tips in Georgia – What to Expect on the Roads

Georgia's roads vary greatly depending on the region. While the highways are in good condition, mountain roads can be difficult. Here are some basic driving tips:

  1. Cross Pass (Kobi – Gudauri)
    • This section of the Georgian Military Road is known for its steep curves and poor road surface.
    • If you are driving a vehicle with low ground clearance, be careful as there is a risk of damage to the underside of the vehicle.
  2. Mountain roads and serpentines
    • Drive slowly on steep curves and always use a low gear to control your speed.
    • When driving downhill, use engine braking to prevent the brakes from overheating.
  3. Animals on the road
    • Cattle and sheep often roam the rural roads of Georgia.
    • While sheep usually move out of the way when signaled, cows do not. Be patient or carefully let them pass.
  4. Difficulties in driving at high altitude
    • At altitudes above 2,500 meters, air density decreases, which can reduce engine efficiency.
    • Be prepared to adjust the gear accordingly, especially on high mountain passes.
